A setup is most useful when the guitar stops feeling or sounding right—not simply because a certain number of months has passed.
Changes in temperature and humidity, a different string gauge, a new tuning and regular playing wear can all affect how a guitar feels. The most useful signs are often straightforward: new fret buzz, notes that do not ring clearly, uncomfortable string height or tuning that drifts as you play up the neck.

Does your guitar need a setup?
Question 1 of 3
What kind of fret buzz are you hearing?
Listen unplugged, then through your amp if you use one. A little acoustic string noise is not always a problem.
01 · Read the signs
Let the guitar tell you
If your guitar still feels comfortable, plays cleanly and stays in tune across the neck, it may not need immediate adjustment. Watch for gradual changes instead of booking work by habit.
A professional setup becomes more worthwhile when:
- The strings feel noticeably higher or lower than before.
- Several notes buzz, choke or lose clarity.
- Chords sound in tune near the nut but drift further up the neck.
- A string or tuning change has left the guitar feeling unbalanced.
- Seasonal weather has noticeably altered the neck or action.
02 · Bring it back into balance
What a setup can improve
A setup brings the parts that affect playability back into balance. The neck, string height and intonation are adjusted for the instrument, the strings and the way you play.
The aim is not a one-size-fits-all factory measurement. It is a guitar that feels comfortable, rings clearly and plays accurately.
03 · When not to guess
When to get the guitar checked first
A sudden change after a knock or fall, visible movement in the neck, deep fret wear or a fault that appears in one specific area may need inspection before anyone assumes it is a routine setup.
Otto offers free appointments at Sixty Sixty Sounds, 28 Denmark Street, London WC2H 8NJ, and will explain any recommended work before it begins.
