London Winter Guitar Care: Humidity Without the Guesswork

London may feel damp in winter, but heated rooms can still dry a guitar. Learn how to monitor humidity, store the instrument safely and recognise warning signs.

A wet London winter can still leave a guitar too dry.

Outdoor weather and the conditions inside a heated flat are not the same thing. Once cold air is warmed indoors, the relative humidity around the instrument can fall. Moving between a cold street, the Tube, a car and a warm room also exposes the guitar to quick temperature changes.

The answer is not to panic every time the heating comes on. It is to measure the conditions where the guitar is stored, make changes gradually and know which warning signs deserve attention.

Why humidity matters to a guitar

Wood takes on and releases moisture as the surrounding air changes. That movement is normal, but large or prolonged changes can affect both playability and structure.

Acoustic guitars are particularly sensitive because their thin wooden tops, backs and braces are designed to move. Electric guitars and basses are more solid, but their necks and fingerboards can still react. Low humidity can shrink a fingerboard enough for fret ends to feel sharp at the edge. High humidity can contribute to swelling, high action, corrosion and weakened glue joints.

Manufacturers including Taylor and Martin commonly recommend keeping wooden guitars around 45–55% relative humidity. Treat that as a practical reference range, not a reason to make abrupt corrections. The guidance supplied by your guitar’s maker should take priority, especially for unusual materials or construction.

London’s winter trap: damp outside, dry beside the radiator

Rain does not tell you the humidity inside your home.

A guitar stored near a radiator, fan heater, fireplace or other direct heat source can dry much faster than the room as a whole. Hanging an instrument on a cold exterior wall can create another uneven environment. A sunny window may also produce repeated temperature swings even when the room feels comfortable.

Choose a storage position away from direct heat, strong sunlight, draughts and exterior-wall cold spots. The place should be stable before it is stylish.

Measure before adding moisture

A digital hygrometer shows the relative humidity around the guitar. Without one, it is easy to add moisture when the instrument does not need it—or fail to notice a genuinely dry case.

For the most useful reading:

  • place the hygrometer where the guitar is normally stored
  • if the guitar lives in its case, measure inside the case
  • allow the reading time to settle rather than reacting to every short fluctuation
  • check more frequently when heating use or the weather changes
  • compare the reading with the instrument maker’s guidance

A single room reading may not reflect the inside of a closed case. Equally, a reading beside a radiator may be much drier than another part of the same room.

The goal is a stable, informed response—not constant adjustment.

The case is useful environmental protection

A hard case or well-fitted protective case slows sudden changes and creates a smaller space that is easier to manage.

That makes it helpful when:

  • the guitar moves between cold outdoor conditions and a warm room
  • the instrument is stored in a home with changing heating patterns
  • a case humidifier is being used
  • the guitar will not be played for several days
  • young children, pets or household activity create additional risk

After bringing a very cold guitar indoors, leave it protected in its case while it warms gradually. Opening it immediately beside strong heat creates a faster change than the instrument needs.

A case is not a cure for every environment. It still needs to be kept away from radiators, damp storage areas and excessive heat.

Choosing a guitar humidifier

Use a guitar-specific humidification system rather than improvised wet materials.

Two-way humidity packs can release or absorb moisture around a target range and are relatively simple to manage. Refillable case or soundhole humidifiers can also work, but they require careful filling and regular checks. No device should leak or place wet material directly against the wood or finish.

Follow the product and guitar manufacturer’s instructions. More moisture is not automatically better. Over-humidifying an instrument can create a different set of problems, including swelling and a rising action.

If the hygrometer already shows a suitable range, adding another humidifier “just in case” may be unnecessary.

Signs a guitar may be too dry

Look for a pattern rather than diagnosing the instrument from one symptom.

Possible signs include:

  • fret ends beginning to feel sharp along the fingerboard edge
  • the action becoming unexpectedly low
  • new buzzing, especially alongside other dryness signs
  • an acoustic top appearing flatter or sunken
  • a visible change around the bridge
  • fine cracks in the wood or finish
  • the guitar changing noticeably after prolonged heating or storage

Low action or fret buzz alone does not prove dryness. Neck relief, fret condition, strings and ordinary setup movement can produce similar symptoms.

If a crack, lifting bridge or strong structural change is visible, stop adjusting and arrange an inspection.

Signs of too much humidity

Excess moisture can also affect a guitar.

Possible signs include:

  • the action rising without another obvious cause
  • an acoustic top appearing more swollen than usual
  • persistent damp or musty conditions in the case
  • corrosion or rapid tarnishing on strings and hardware
  • a bridge, brace or joint beginning to move

Again, these signs need context. A high action may be a setup issue rather than humidity. The hygrometer reading and the guitar’s recent storage history help make the picture clearer.

Do not force a dry guitar back overnight

Wood responds over time. If an instrument appears dry, gradual, monitored rehumidification is safer than exposing it to uncontrolled moisture.

Keep the guitar in its case with an appropriate system, check the hygrometer and follow the maker’s guidance. Do not place the guitar in a steamy bathroom, near a boiling kettle or beside an open container of water. Avoid direct contact between wet materials and the instrument.

A guitar that has developed a crack, loose joint, lifting bridge or severe change in shape needs professional assessment. Humidity care may stabilise the environment, but it does not undo physical damage.

What about electrics and basses?

Solid-body instruments are generally less vulnerable to top and brace movement because they do not have the same thin acoustic body. Their wooden necks and fingerboards still react to changing conditions.

Seasonal neck movement, sharp fret ends and changes in action can affect electric guitars and basses too. Store them away from direct heat, measure the environment and avoid rapid temperature changes. If the instrument has a delicate finish, check the maker’s guidance before using any stand, hanger or case material for long periods.

A calm London winter routine

You do not need to turn guitar care into a daily science project.

A practical routine is:

  1. Store the guitar away from direct heat and cold exterior walls.
  2. Keep a digital hygrometer where the instrument actually lives.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s humidity range as your guide.
  4. Keep the guitar cased when conditions are unstable or it is not being played.
  5. Add a guitar-specific humidity system only when the reading shows it is needed.
  6. Let a cold instrument warm gradually in its case.
  7. Watch for several related warning signs rather than reacting to one small change.

When a setup or inspection is useful

Humidity changes can alter neck relief, action and fret feel. Once the environment is stable, the guitar may still need a setup adjustment to return it to the player’s preferred feel.

An inspection is useful when the change is substantial, the cause is unclear, an adjuster feels wrong, or there are signs of structural movement. A setup can correct ordinary adjustment issues; cracks, loose joints, lifting bridges and fret problems are separate repair work.
